V_b/g = V_a/g + V_b/a = 50 mph + (-50 mph) = 0, where V_b/g is the velocity of the ball with respect to a grounded observer, V_a/g is the velocity of the truck with respect to the grounded observer, and V_b/a is the velocity of the ball relative to the truck. This is an application of Galilean relativity.
